Gallery for 2001.
In 2001 artist Ivor Arbuckle of Splinter Community Arts Ltd was commissioned
to work with the users and volunteers at the Mind drop-in-centre in Burton
on Trent. The project was part of East Staffordshire Borough Council's
Community Arts Programme and was conceived and developed by members of
Mind. Its aim was to try to find new ways of involving people in creative
activity to express their thoughts and views, to promote the services
of Burton Mind and to have fun doing it ! The result was an exhibition
of digital artworks and the production of a 'karaoke' style c.d. Here
are some of the images created.
The project was funded by East Staffordshire Borough Council and West
Midlands Arts.
"The members of Burton MIND who were involved in this project were
surprised by their own capabilities and artistry. They created work which
surpassed their expectations. They also found new friendships within the
centre, talking to other members with whom they thought they had nothing
in common.
Members also found the new skills they had learned had opened doors.
For them, doors within their minds, that they had locked, were opened
and feelings put into artwork- memories in pictures! Some happy, some
sad. This was found to be painful and productive. Most members stayed with
the project right through, others, as in their illnesses found it too
disturbing, but after thinking through would like the chance to try again.
Hopefully this can be done if funding becomes available".
