Our Counselling Services

This April, we are taking the opportunity to celebrate our Counselling services and the positive impact that counselling can have on mental health!

We can all reach points in our lives where we may begin to feel overwhelmed, and having someone listen to us without judgment can truly make all the difference.

At Burton and District Mind, we offer Counselling and Coaching for adults and young people (16+), which can either be through the NHS or Lat a ow Cost.

These are usually done across 6 weeks in sessions that last around 50 to 60 minutes, and can be face to face, on the phone or virtually over the internet. Counselling can be a time where lots of difficult emotions and experiences may be explored and discussed, and as such, it is so important that the person receiving the counselling is in an environment they feel both safe and comfortable in.

The idea of initially reaching out and beginning therapy can often be a daunting experience, which is usually due to the stigmas surrounding the topic. For example, you may feel like asking for help for your mental health may lead to judgement or even that it shows weakness to do so.

But just like all things in life, there is nothing wrong with asking for help when it's needed. Especially when it comes to health.

So how exactly can counselling help your mental health?

With mental health, there can sometimes be a notion of “if I ignore it, over time it’ll get better”, and you may feel like talking about it won’t change anything. However, there are many reasons why it is vital to look after your mental health.

Firstly, it is an opportunity to talk to someone outside of your life who is highly qualified and provides a safe judgment-free environment. Perhaps the idea of disclosing personal details to someone in your everyday life may be a bit daunting, as you may feel it could change how they perceive you. Whereas a counsellor is someone completely outside of that.

It can also…

  • Help you to build healthier relationships within your life. With a counsellor you could develop communication skills and work through any issues you may have when it comes

    to forming relationships with people.

  • Identifying any triggers that could add difficulty to everyday life.

  • Be an opportunity to learn ways to better cope with stress, anxiety and depression.

  • Be a chance to improve your confidence and self-esteem. We can all experience doubts about ourselves sometimes, and this can be a chance to work out why we feel that way and find a way to get past those thoughts.

  • Help with decision-making. It can sometimes be so helpful to talk out decisions and weigh out the impacts that such a decision could have. This could be helpful in perhaps finding ways to prevent impulsive decisions or being too indecisive.

These are just a few different ways that counselling can support your mental health, however, this list really can highlight just how fantastic it can be!
