We spend so much time worrying about the past and the future that we rarely take the time to live in the present moment. There is a lot of evidence that shows that teaching ourselves to be more present actually benefits our mental and emotionally well-being.
Here are a few ideas on how to do this:
Practice mindfulness for a few minutes everyday – there are lots of ways to do this, for example if you are on a walk, take the time to look at what is around you, focus on the sounds you can hear right now, the things you can see right in front of you. Do this for as long as you can, the more you train your brain to do this the easier it becomes.
Show gratitude – this means being consciously grateful for everything that you have right now, all the good things in your life, bring them to the forefront of your mind as often as you can. Again you are bringing the mind to think about the hear and now and not what you haven’t got or what you are longing for.
Focus on one thing at a time – life is so busy a lot of the time and has us trying to do so many things at once. Make a conscious effort to do one thing at a time and think carefully about that one thing as you are doing it. Again it trains the mind to do this more often.
Allow your senses to take over for a moment – sometimes allowing yourself to listen, see, smell, touch things more intently can help you be in the moment rather than thinking about other things.
